Another sportsball weekend, this time the annual Civil War match-up between the University of Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers. I didn't have any beaver plates in stock, so had to make do with a platypus.

The game started at noon, so I think a lot of vendors figured it wasn't worth coming out to Market. Lots of empty spaces, and quite a few folks who usually get a 4x4-foot space found themselves expanding into a full eight-foot square.

Including my neighbor for the day, a jeweler named Be, selling necklaces and bracelets with crystals and semi-precious stones. A bit of a tough sell, her price point was above the average for this Market, and pitching the healing power of various crystals didn't seem to help. She said she estimated her prices based on time and cost of materials, then checked against what ChatGTP thought she should charge, and how does that even work?

I'm sure it didn't help that her neighbors were selling appreciably better than she was. Jim the glass artist was having a particularly good day, I was above average for me, which is close to unattainable to a lot of vendors. Even Jesse started out the morning with an early sale of two bug-and-butterfly shadow boxes, and sold steadily the rest of the day.

Saw a lot of folks in Oregon green and yellow early on, but only one old duffer in an OSU hat. None actually buying anything, of course; they can come to Saturday Market any time, and at this point in the year, they're mostly asking if we'll be at Holiday Market. Still, I needed to be there for a couple of orders to pick up. (Only one of whom actually did, but she bought two cat stew mugs, so there'd be a spare if her mom broke one again.)

Had a bunch of repeat customers, though, one picking up a pair of plates to fill out her set, another young couple continuing to add to their collection. Best sale of the day went to a woman buying a wedding present, who couldn't decide between a barn owl serving bowl and barn owl platter. So she bought both.

Had a mother and daughter come in with sad news: the pie plate daughter had bought for mother's day split on first use. Not in the oven, actually, cold on the edge of the sink as mom was scooping out the remains of the pie. I offered to replace it, of course--I stand by my work--either a different pattern from current stock or the same pattern from my next firing. Mom asked if she could replace it with something else of similar value, which I of course agreed to. She picked out a stick butter dish which was a direct price match and went home satisfied. I'll probably glue the plate back together--it's quite a nice otter and baby pattern--and hang it on the wall of shame in my studio.

Saw a couple of crow-themed t-shirts: Jesse, my neighbor, had one that said Crows, not Bros: Support your local Murder. And someone walking by had a crow-patterned shirt that read F-(caw)f! (Say it out loud...) So it's probably appropriate that I took a special order for two raven bowls, a soup and a toddler.

Never was super busy, but never got slow enough to pull my Kindle out of the bag. The last end-of-day dinner plate sale brought me over $800, a worthwhile outing.

Despair Sucks. Perhaps a Palate Cleanser's in Order

Even though the world is on fire and every morning brings pit-of-the-stomach dread about what the morning headlines will tell, it isn't giving up the fight to say "today I'm going to tell despair to suck it."

I realized this morning that my last couple of posts have been full of rage and frustration. Those are true emotions, but they're also corrosive in the long run - and who the hell knows how much time "the long run" comprises. So here are a couple of things I can honestly say made me smile, or things that I did that I think were fun, or good for someone.

I can't recall if I've mentioned my friend Sandy's efforts to get her and her husband, Dr. Bob, back into the house they had to leave last December because of fire. Their situation has been fraught on so many levels, and Bob and I haven't been able to help much, other than to have them over for supper and an evening away from their long-term BnB just to have time away from the whole thing. But now that they're starting the process of getting back home, we've been able to help.

They have had 1100 badly packed and mislabeled boxes of goods delivered back to their house (that's part of why their situation has been so fraught, even now) and they were overwhelmed with the prospect of unboxing everything and putting things back to rights. Bob and I have spent a few hours every day or so helping them do that; from helping them sort things into "keep," "give away," and "pitch" bags, to simple things like breaking down boxes. Boxes and boxes and boxes - and breaking down those boxes and packing garbage bag after garbage bag with the paper used to pack the boxes - becomes really important in this situation. Sometimes all Sandy needed was someone to listen as we took a coffee break, so that she wasn't simply screaming into the void.

As of today, when I walked in to help Dr. Bob and their friend Steve with more unboxing, the place is starting to look a fair bit more than simply piles of boxes. I think even Dr. Bob, who is inclined to be a glass half empty type, was feeling a little bit of hope.

They have a long way to go before the place is completely back to rights, but at least they know we won't abandon them. Their longtime friend and retired housekeeper is coming up from Birmingham to do some of the heavy emotional and unpacking lifting that's still necessary. I think they'll finally be able to call their home an actual home before the end of the year.

Earlier this week, we had the unexpected pleasure of a visit from
[personal profile] ljgeoff , who was on her way from one travel nursing assignment to another. It's been a few years since Lisa last visited us; we shared some pizza, chocolate chip cookies, and conversation, and then she was on her way. She has more energy in her little finger than I have in my entire body. She also is braver than I think I'll ever be. It was a joy to be in the same room with her again.

And finally, we've decided to give away the Keurig coffee/tea/whatever maker that a friend gave us. We are drinking enough coffee these days that we haven't used the Keurig in months. Mind you, given the increasing price of coffee, perhaps keeping the Keurig and getting rid of the regular coffee maker might be the smarter choice. Sigh.

Haven't done this one in a while. Following AO3, not the drabbles/ficlets only posted to DW. Also haven't written in a while, so most of these are a few years old.

Share the first and last lines of the last five stories you have posted to AO3.

The Fire and the Ember, Masters of the Air, Marge/Peggy

First: They didn't really need to climb in through Marge's bedroom window, it wasn't like her parents didn't know that Peggy was spending the weekend, but it was tradition at this point.

Last: She pressed her nose against the back of Marge's neck, and did just that.

A Fire in Arkansas, Band of Brothers, Johnny/Bull

First: Johnny figured that the old saw "smooth runs the water where the brook is deep" had been invented by someone who'd known Bull Randleman, but even he didn't expect what his corporal said as they sat in a meagre pool of shade half a mile out of Helena, Arkansas.

Last: He clapped Bull on the arm, Bull shoved him back, and they jogged forward towards the rising sun.

Natasha's Christmas Plans, Top Gun: Maverick, Natasha/Callie

First: "So here's the plan," Natasha said as she closed the hatch to the stateroom she shared with Callie.

Last: First chance she got, she was going to find some plastic mistletoe to tape to the bottom of her bunk, but for now they didn't need it.

Across the Waves, Across the Heather, Kidnapped! by RLS, Davie/Alan

First: Alan landed on the deck of the Covenant breathless and reeling, all those good men dead, and nearly himself as well.

Last: "Oh, I could kiss you!" Alan cried, and then did.

Every Time He Hears Their Voices (An End of the Affair Remix), Band of Brothers, Don/Skip/Alex

First: This is the moment Don has lived in since the tenth of January 1945: He's tucked back away from the line, catching a few minutes rest as he tries to choke down beans that half froze the instant Joe Domingo ladled them onto his plate.

Last: This is what does: all of the days after.

All weekend (cool and jacket weather yesterday, humid and warm today) there's been an autumnal tinge of woodsmoke to the air, either someone illegally burning leaves or the new Texas smokehouse at Christie and Dupont in the former and much-missed Starbucks building. Tempting, except for the lines out the door and down the street Friday. And closed Monday and Tuesday and at 4:30 on the days they're open.

Meanwhile have filled a garbage pail with linden seedlings and got it on the porch against the forecast rain. There's still lots more by the house but those can wait. Saturday I ran across J down the street and her two kids mowing the front yard of the house next door to them, which belonged to an Italian grandpa called Rafi. Rafi died recently aged 96 and quite ready to go; his grandkids have the house now, is why there's been stuff for the taking on the sidewalk these past few weeks. One of these was an ancient (ie about as old as I am) lawnmower which tiny O was using to decimate the weeds, which picked up a stone and flung it 15 ft/ 5 metres in my direction as I was coming up the street. Missed me by a bit  but would have made an interesting obituary, as J said. But she also mentioned that she grinds the leaves to mulch and puts it on her own front yard, and I must ask her how. Rati's house is detached, a downtown rarity, and probably in need of renovation  if mine is anything to judge by,  so not sure if the grandkids will in fact hold on to it. What amazes me more is that J and the kids were on close terms with him, because I always assumed he spoke no more English than Signora does, or my former next door neighbours the Pisanis. Which is why you shouldn't assume.

The gardening only got done thanks to a couple of Black Russians + cream, because back is not happy with me doing anything. I continue with my core-strengthening exercises but not with any noticeable effect.

The week in review

Three things I did last week: (That may or may not have involved clay.)

1. Canned tomato sauce. We hit our favorite local farm stand and came home with apples, sweet corn, apple cider donuts (Denise's requirement) and two lugs of Roma tomatoes. Also mushrooms and green onions, which I sautéed and sweated, respectively, Sunday night. Monday, I washed and stemmed the tomatoes, cut them into wedges, and commenced cooking. Took a break at lunchtime, during which Denise diverted a bunch to be sliced and loaded in the food dryer. Cooked down the tomatoes, two kettles at a time, mixed in the mushrooms and onions, commenced to canning. Came up a little short on the the additives, so I ran some of the cooked tomatoes through the food mill to can as juice. Water bath canner, 35 minutes per batch; by suppertime, we had made and sealed 20 quarts of tomato sauce, 4 quarts of juice.

2. Threw and assembled two dozen animal banks, elephants and tyrannosaurs. Also 21 pie plates (not pictured).

The Rex's are lying on their backs overnight to let the legs stiffen up. Or possibly to encourage you to pet their tummies. (It's a trap!)

3. Tearing off and replacing the east side of my pottery shed.

When we bought this place, one of the attractions was available storage. There were not one, but two storage units adjacent to the car port. Denise took over one for paper; I got the other for pottery. Over the years, the east wall has deteriorated. It was never great--they'd nailed up a couple of sheets of plywood, cross-wise, with two-by-fours supporting them, slapped on some white paint, and called it good. The past two years, the plywood has started to de-laminate, and dry-rot has attacked the two-by-fours. I really wanted to replace things before the rains returned.

So Wednesday, I went out to Jerry's and bought two 4x8-foot, pre-primed siding panels, wrestled them up on the roof rack, and drove them home. My drill driver's battery packs no longer hold a charge, and DeWalt doesn't make replacements anymore so I borrowed one from the Toolbox Project on Thursday. Friday morning was devoted to tearing down the old wall, repositioning a couple of studs, framing in some cross-members. Had to make another trip to Jerry's for a primed 8-foot 1x6 and a couple of 2x2's for the crosspieces, but got the whole project done by suppertime. I still need to pick up a bucket of paint, but Sunday morning's rain did not get inside.

Called in sick on Friday - and for the most part stayed off the computer, and just watched television and dozed. wrestling with vertigo and loss of balance - most likely due to allergies and sinus issues, also caffeine withdrawl )
***

Question a Day Memage - September continued:

[As an aside - there's an interesting spelling difference between British English and American English. In British English they use "u" in words ending with or. Examples include favourite vs. favorite, colour vs. color, or colouring vs. coloring, flavour vs. flavor. I pick up on it partly because spellcheck on my computer is US, and the meme is British spelling.
I remember when I sent the book I published to an editor - he told that I was using a lot of British spellings for things, which I didn't catch because I was busy interacting online with a people who lived in the UK and were utilizing those spellings. I wonder about that difference. And others. And what is the origin of the difference - when did the American version split off? And why? I'm not a linguist so I wouldn't know.]

18. Did you have colouring books as a child? Have you tried any adult colouring books?

Yes. I didn't like them and drew, doodled, and colored outside the lines.

19. Are you adventurous with your menus, or do you stick to tried and tested ideas for meals?

I play around. I also get into routines. I am not good with a lot of left-overs. I can't prepare food for a week and eat it. My stomach is picky and I have scant storage space. (Small one bedroom apartment, with a refrigerator and small freezer). But I'd say I'm adventurous and I like to experiment - to the degree in which my body can handle it? Which unfortunately is insanely limited. Celiac tends to branch into other food sensitivities, if caught later in life.

20. Do you have a favourite quiz show that you regularly watch on TV?

I'll watch Jeopardy every once and a while.

21. How is Autumn treating you? What’s the weather like?

The weather is beautiful and mild. Feels like early spring, actually. 60s and 70s, occasional 80 degree day, sometimes 59 degrees.

Sunny. Not a lot of rain. Still see flowers, and all the trees are green and fully leaved.

I've been having issues with allergies, sleeplessness, back/leg pain, depression, and digestive issues - so I have been ill. And trying to figure it out.

Feeling a little better right now. Hence this post. Best I've felt in the last four days at least. Not stellar but better.

I had to stay up and work until 2am on Friday (aka Saturday morning) but I am finally fully caught up with work!!!

I'm still a little mushy-minded - just permanently lost 489 rosaries in Hollow Knight: Silksong fighting regular enemies πŸ˜… - but my stress is completely gone πŸ’—

Since my sister couldn't visit this weekend due to train issues, we and a few friends have been hanging out online this weekend. I also took the time to get my nominations in for [community profile] yuletide / [community profile] yuletide_admin, which you can see over on the Nomination Coordination Station.

I even managed to make promo posts for the fandoms I've nominated:
- BioShock Infinite
- Candela Obscura
- Killjoys (TV)
- Monstress (Comics)
- We Used to Live Here - Marcus Kliewer

Hope everyone's had a good weekend (or that the upcoming week will be better)! I'm still hard at work catching up with everyone here on DW, but I'm looking forward to reading everyone's posts πŸ’–
