"TV questions: pick your five favourite TV shows (in no particular order) and answer the following questions. Don’t cheat!"
I don't know if these are literally my fav's, but they're the ones that came to mind (excluding anime). There may be spoilers below.
1. Blake’s 7
2. Andor
3. Game of Thrones
4. Crusade
5. Doctor Who
“1) Who’s your favourite character in 2 (Andor)?”
Cassian. A lot of people who like the show argue that he’s kind of boring but it’s okay because he’s really just a pivot for the show to turn on. I don’t know what they’re talking about. He’s bloody fascinating. I mean to each their own, but I wonder if some folks are confusing “boring” with “restrained.” He is usually restrained, but I can see the wheels turn in his head while he’s just sitting and listening to someone. For me, the most interesting thing about Cassian is the mix of stability and trauma in his life experience. He’s a survivor of genocide who’s grown up under imperial-colonial domination—but (as far as S1) no one he trusts has ever betrayed him. He is grounded in a core community of love and care, and this weird mix of emotional steadiness and sharp survival instinct positions him to be a pivotal rebel.
“2) Who’s your least favourite character in 1 (Blake’s 7)?”
Oh, Travis probably, if we’re talking about major characters. I like Travis 1 better than 2, but neither is much developed and, therefore, the character is a bit boring. As to minor characters, I could say Jarvik, but, man, he’s so much fun. Maybe Egrorian, he’s just creepy.
“3) What’s your favourite episode of 4 (Crusade)?”
Amazingly this question came up for a series with few enough ep’s that I can answer it. It may expose my inner romantic, but it’s the one that goes into the backstory about Galen and Isabel. I don’t remember its title.
“4) What’s your favourite season of 5 (Doctor Who)?”
And then there was this question, which had to ask about the series that’s been on for 60+ years. Okay, of New Who, probably season 2. Though I’m not a Doctor/Rose shipper, I do like the vibe of the series in that era. I can be emo (see Galen and Isabel). Of Old Who, it’s… 17 (?), the one with the Romana 2.
“5) What’s your favourite ship in 3 (Game of Thrones)?”
So I’m going to say, loosely, Jaime and Brienne BUT not necessarily as a couple and certainly not the way they were written in season 8, which, for me, was the biggest fail in the show. The thing I really like about their connection is that it can’t be defined by their society (and not well by ours). They’re not lovers or, I’d argue, really “in love,” though there is an attraction. They’re not allies; they’re not family. To say they’re “friends” may be true is but so bland as to be fairly meaningless. They couldn’t even describe what they are to each other, and that makes the fact that they clearly do come to love each other very raw and authentic, helped by great acting. (And, yes, I could see them getting together, but the way it ended up written was like middle school fan fic.)
“6) Who is your anti-ship in 2 (Andor)?”
Uh, I don’t have one? I mean, most of the characters wouldn’t fit well as romantic pairings, but I don’t see any case where they’re shoved together as such, maybe because I haven’t read a lot of fic. I have read some fic that pairs Cassian with various guys in prison and, you know, I’m fine with that.
“7) How long have you watched 1 (Blake’s 7)?”
Oh baby, I think I first caught glimpses of it when I was maybe 7-to-10, probably fairly close to when it first hit the US on PBS. I watched it all the way through as a teen, starting at about 15 and have been an avid fan ever since, so about 35 years.
“8) How did you become interested in 3 (Game of Thrones)?”
Funny story, a friend of mine sent me a DVD of the first few episodes, maybe a year after S1 aired. I watched the first ep and, thought, “Jesus, this is very paint-by-the-numbers.” But I watched a few more and, no, it wasn’t (then).
“9) Who’s your favourite actor in 4 (Crusade)?”
Peter Woodward. Very sad he didn’t get to do more with Galen, and also sad I haven’t really seen him in anything else. He’s quite hammy as Galen, but then, Galen is hammy; it’s a Technomage thing, totally in character.
“10) Which show do you prefer? 1 (Blake’s 7), 2 (Andor), or 5 (Doctor Who)?”
Totally unfair question. Andor, I think, is a child of Blake’s 7. I’d be surprised if B7 weren’t in back of the minds of its creators. Of course, Andor is much slicker and better made. What do you expect? But B7 can never be replaced; its core is amazing. Doctor Who is in a totally different realm. In my opinion, it’s rarely brilliant episode by episode. Though there are shining exceptions, it’s mostly just fun. But across 60 years of weirdly organic evolution, it’s developed a depth and weight that can’t be matched by any other sci-fi show. So for technical prowess, Andor; for powerful storytelling, Blake’s 7; for sheer scope, Doctor Who.
“11) Which show have you seen more episodes of; 1 (Blake’s 7) or 3 (Game of Thrones)?”
Erm, I believe I’ve seen all eps of both of them (or nearly of GoT), so it just depends which has more episodes, which I guess is GoT?
“12) If you could be anyone from 4 (Crusade), who would you be?”
I would not want to be anyone in Crusade. I can’t even think of a minor character I’d want to be. Maybe Alwyn (?), the old Technomage dude living quietly on a far-flung planet?
“13) How would you kill off your favourite character in 1 (Blake’s 7)?”
So I’m going to make all B7 fans mad at me—and also SPOILERS…
But my favorite character is Avon, and I think he should go down like the series sort of suggests he does (at a superficial read), getting taken out by all those Federation troops. I think that fits the tragic arc of the story best. Is it what I want to read in fan fic? No. But I’m glad to consider fan fic my guilty pleasure, as opposed to what I think actually works best for the narrative.
“14) Give a random quote from 1 (Blake’s 7).”
“A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.”
“15) Would a 3 (Game of Thrones)/4 (Crusade) crossover work?”
Hm. It would depend on how one situated the GoT world. It would probably have to be an alien world where a bunch of humans were seeded some thousands of years ago. In that case, I think you could make a logical case for a crossover. Whether there’s an emotional need for one is less clear, but I think Tyrion and Galen could have an interesting conversation.
“16) Pair two characters in 1 (Blake’s 7) that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.”
Blake/Avalon. Actually, they were a sometime couple in the great crossover ‘verse in my head. Both dedicated rebels. Why not? (This may not be very inventive, but I’m not sure where the B7 zone for “unlikely” but “okay” lies. I think most of the “likely” suspects have been shipped.)
“17) Has 5 (Doctor Who) inspired you in any way?”
It has inspired me to write fan fic and essays and spend a great deal of time worldbuilding about Gallifrey and figuring out a backstory for the Doctor that I personally like.
“18) Overall, which show has a better cast? 3 (Game of Thrones) or 5 (Doctor Who)?”
Not really a fair question given how incomparable they are, but I’m going to say GoT, which has pretty good casting throughout. Doctor Who also has pretty good casting, but I am tired to the very bottom of my soul of 20-year-old, contemporary, plucky British girl companions.
“19) Which has better theme music, 2 (Andor) or 4 (Crusade)?”
I can’t even remember the theme music of Crusade, except it was a bit odd and techno? So probably Andor. I will say, though, the music of Andor has not made much impression on me, though it’s impressed many others a lot. I think it’s too subtle for my ear, but I’m trying to listen to it more carefully. (The ultimate winner, of course, would be Doctor Who, followed by GoT, followed by B7—for sheer gumption, followed by Andor, followed by Crusade.)

Date: 2024-11-28 05:42 pm (UTC)I dismiss the timeless child from my head canon. I don't have any precise backstory for the Doctor's family of origin, but I generally assume he came from a normal, fairly upscale Gallifreyan family, as Time Lords, in general, seem to be an upper class on Gallifrey.
Most of my mental ficcing has been around how the Doctor ended up with Susan, and my general story is that he originally fled in the TARDIS with his daughter, who eventually married a Englishman (hence Susan's apparently "real"/only human name and the Doctor's weird tie to England). Long story short, both Susan's parents died, leaving her with the Doctor.
I see "Susan's Grandmother" is the Doctor's ex; he seems like the sort of person who would not do well in a LTR, and I don't understand why we have to default to the cliché that she's his tragically dead true love. So she'd be back on Gallifrey for all this, and they'd have a custody battle over Susan, which he wins by refusing to comply with the inevitable order to return her to Gallifrey. I think, though, that Susan eventually made it to Gallifrey and maybe had quite a good relationship with her grandmother. Until otherwise shown, I assume they both died in the Time War.
