Your essay is excellent. You referred to it as a rant, but it's not at all. It's very even-toned and reasonable. If mine reads like literary criticism, it's because I wrote my dissertation on evolutionary discourse in science fiction, so this topic snapped me into dissertation mode. (I didn't, however, mention The X-Men in my dissertation, which I easily could have. It just wasn't very prominent in my consciousness at that time.)
