I'm looking for names of public figures, still alive today, who progressive thinkers might consider morally good conservatives, by some definition. I'm thinking of people like Pope Leo, for example. This could include, for example, political figures, religious leaders, authors, journalists, actors, philanthropists, etc.

This is for an essay I'm writing on making broad alliances. I'd welcome your thoughts.

Maybe Ruth Davidson, former leader of the Scottish Conservatives? I'm a lefty and she's not, and she's a unionist and I'm not, but she generally comes across as someone smart, moderate, and capable of examining her own actions critically.

Ian Hislop (Lord Gnome of Private Eye) does not reveal how he votes -- he's a professional satirist, and showing particular favour to one party isn't really how he vibes. But in UK terms, he has some tags that could place him as small-C conservative, rather than Conservative/Tory. He's Anglican, Oxford-educated, presenter of several Radio 4 documentaries on somewhat old school English/British themes. His publication has made some mistakes, but also done a lot of good -- for example, in its coverage of the Post Office Horizon scandal.

The project sounds really worthwhile. Hope you do find plenty of examples!

The biggest one I know of is Arnold Swarzenegger. After that you have Liz Cheney, and the sadly passed away John McCain. It has been harder and harder to have (American) Republican Party politicians who have also been good human beings. Which is sad, and a party disaster.

On the other hand, I am actually a registered Republican and always have been. On the other other hand, the only Republican politician I have voted for (see bad human above) has been for Arnold Swarzenegger's second term. He did the state good and continued to do so after re-election. I did not vote for him for the recall election.

Oh, right, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. He refused to change the vote when asked by at least Lindsey Graham. He is a republican, but he emphatically upheld his oath to fulfill the laws regarding his execution of official duties.
