So I was scheduled for my colonoscopy yesterday but it was cancelled so we had to reschedule. B's father passed away last night, and so I am thankful my appointment got canceled because at least B got to spend time with her father. Her father was always nice to me, and I got to spend time with him beore he started succumbing to Alzheimer's. We went to Rockport together and had stuffed clams, and one time went to the Union Oyster House, where we enjoyed a meal together. I'm going to miss him. B is a mess right now, and will be likely staying for a few more days at her mother's house, which is understandable.

I've been busy cleaning up the house and organizing the basement where I tend to hang out. Stopped using the pool table as a catch-all and vacuumed it off, brought down the metal bookcase from the garage and set it up, organized the closet, etc. The only things out of place right now is the bar table, currently occupied by the Kustom amplifier that I'm working on and all the small parts associated with it. I'm going to Home Depot to pick up a small parts bin so I can get those organized, and then to Wal-Mart to get a bookcase for my books. B has requested me bring some stuff to her from home, so it's going to be a busy day. Did get some writing/editing done, which is always good.

The answer is probably not

This is the sort of trip I never felt able to schedule before retirement: put together several purposes and just take a couple weeks to see people and do things.

I flew out on a red-eye because I always have this dilemma when flying east that I can either get up at an ungodly hour of the morning (which means either leaving my car at long-term parking, or getting an airport hotel room the night before), or I can arrive later in the evening than I want to be dealing with unfamiliar transit systems, or I can take a red-eye and have the logistics at both ends done at a reasonable hour of the day...at the expense of losing most of a night's sleep. I did sleep for several hours, but then spent most of yesterday vegging around L's appartment. (Which worked out because she had several online things to do.)

Today is L's big-number birthday celebration (one of the aforesaid "several purposes"). Then I have five days in NYC in which I have two items scheduled, which gives me a chance for more spontaneity than I usually have on trips. After that, it's up to Maine for the family part of the trip.

I was able to get all my blog/podcast stuff set up for the rest of the month--only need to switch things to "live" on the web--so any "work" I do on this trip can be on less urgent (i.e., actually writing on book projects). I think I've been managing better at avoiding having short-term deadlines rule my creative life, but somehow the non-fiction projects have called to me more strongly than the fiction. I suspect that's because the non-fiction is more in the revisions phased than the "creating text out of nothing" phase.

We did NOT get up to 60 degrees this weekend, though we did get up to the mid-50's and some welcome rain. Temperatures have been dropping all week, though, and we can expect more seasonal weather the next few days.

What I Noped Out of This Week

A Deadly Education, I let it sit for 24 hours, picked it up again, and put it down after half a page. Then I tried another Set in a College or University thing, I can't even remember what it was, and THEN I finally got smart and ditched that bingo square altogether. Plenty of options for substitutions/wild cards, so no loss at all.

What I Just Finished Reading (Highlights)

Several short things, not very memorable, and then on a cold rainy Saturday, The Frozen River, which was absolutely worth the long wait. Very reminiscent of Outlander, not the time-travel bits but the long-married-couple-still-besotted-with-each-other, so refreshing to read. Also fascinating that this was based on actual diaries of an eighteenth-century midwife. There are major plot elements of sexual violence, patriarchy, and gaslighting, but the female characters are so strong and vivid. Highly recommend. For A to Z Authors.

What I Am Currently Reading

I probably shouldn't have picked up The Aviator and the Showman: Amelia Earhart, George Putnam, and the Marriage that Made an American Icon, by Laurie Gwen Shapiro, so soon after The Frozen River, because it's once again features a sexual predator, emotionally and financially manipulative. It's also (so far, I'm at 41%) not very impressed by Amelia Earhart's actual flying abilities, focusing more on the fact that she was young and pretty(ish) and easily pushed into the limelight by her manager/lover/husband. It will be interesting to see if the author discusses improvement in her flying skill. (Edit: She did.)So far it seems the book is focusing on what a jerkass George Putnam was. For A to Z Titles.

People of the Book, by Geraldine Brooks. Just the kind of meaty historical fiction I adore. For A to Z Titles.

Year long meme

So as promised/threatened in the last post here’s the first of a few posts intended over the next few days (how much will be done will depend on how distracted I get and the Animal Crossing update is live so…). (And I need to reply to comments on old posts too)

I saw [profile] yarnofaridne post this year long meme which is from [personal profile] changeling72 here. So here’s me answering the January ones so far.

1. What are you most looking forward to in 2026?

I’m sure I’m missing things but these are the first that come to mind,

Films: Cold Storage, The Mandalorian And Grogu, The Odyssey
Games: Pokémon Pokopia, Hyrule Warriors (it came out last year I know but I’ve not got it yet), Resident Evil
Gigs: 5 Seconds Of Summer, Waterparks (when I order it)
Tv: Seven Dials, Ahsoka (assuming season 2 is out this year)

Also the new Doctor Who Collection (season 21) is coming in a few months. And there’s the standard stuff (free comic book day, Halloween).

2. What are you least looking forward to in 2026?

I’m waiting on hospital appointments for scans which I’m not a fan of. Hopefully it’ll just be a one off thing but the waiting and prospect of being in there all day is stressful.

3. What are your holiday/vacation plans for 2026?

I don’t have any planned and likely won’t have any. I’ve not had a vacation of any kind in so long.

4. Do you believe in reincarnation? If so, will you come back as another person, or another animal entirely?

Ohh interesting question. I’m not sure, maybe? It’s an interesting concept and I think it is possible but I’m not sure about it. I dunno if I’d want to come back as a person (then again would it be a choice?) I’d probably prefer to be some sort of animal.

5. Do you enjoy watching or participating in sport? If so, what sporting event are you most looking forward to in 2026?

Oh no I’m not a sportsball person. I definitely don’t participate, I always hated PE at school. The only time I watch any is when the Olympics and Paralympics is on. Other than that the closest I’m gonna get is Heated Rivalry and I don’t think I’ll learn much about ice hockey.

6. What colour do you think most suits you? Does you partner/family/friends agree?

Purple is my fav colour but it’s not often that there’s much in purple so most of my clothes are black. I wish I had more purple or colourful stuff. One of my fav recent clothing purchases was a stranger things sweater in bright red and that’s nice and cosy and bright.

7. What are your worst and best traits?

I’m not sure what my best are. I try and be caring and kind, I can be creative.

Worst, having bad focus, indecisiveness, shyness, I can get prone to anger or frustration. How I look and sound.

8. Whom do you take after most - your mother or father?

That’s hard to answer since I have no reference for my father.

9. Do you have any siblings? If yes, are you close to them?

I have at least one half brother, but other than that I dunno. Maybe I have a lot more of them but who knows?I sure don’t.

10. Tell us about your earliest memory.

Mum went out to do something and I was left with my grandparents. I, however wanted to go with her. Somehow I got out of the house and was found by someone and taken to the police, but I was told not to talk to strangers and so didn’t say anything. (Obviously I ended up back home but that’s the extent of my memory of it)

11. Whom do you miss the most (for whatever reason they are absent from your life)?

My nan, she was the member of the family I was closest to. It hurt so much that her last years were spent in a care home due to developing Alzheimer's. That’s a fate I don’t wish on anyone, either having it yourself or seeing someone you love suffer from it. I’m glad she’s not suffering anymore but I miss her.

I also miss other people that have left but most of them turned out to be toxic and awful to various degrees. My brain, of course, does fixate on them at times which… sucks.

12. Do you have a passport? If so, when did you last use it and where did you go?

I do but it’s probably out of date. I think the last time I used one for travel was to Cyprus but I could be wrong.

13. If a black cat crosses your path, do you consider it lucky or unlucky?

Lucky! Cats are always good and friends🖤

14. What was the most recent movie you saw at the cinema? Do you recommend it?

Anaconda, thoughts here, but yea would recommend it.

I’ll probably do these in batches (instead of daily) but not this many, but who knows?

Mostly old people problems

Comics Curmudgeon readers! Do you love this blog and yearn for a novel written by its creator? Well, good news: Josh Fruhlinger's The Enthusiast is that novel! It's even about newspaper comic strips, partly. Check it out!

Beetle Bailey, 1/14/26

I feel like if you have an elderly authority figure looking startled and somewhat confused and shouting “Take some notes!” and then immediately afterwards passing out, and his subordinates are gleeful about it because it means they don’t have to do work, that’s a little less “Ha, this is a zany situation” and a little more elder abuse. It’s sadly not that unheard of for a powerful but ailing person’s staff to basically puppet them for an extended period of time, and it’s all fun and games until, in this case, the area of the United States protected by Camp Swampy is invaded by enemy forces and no competent general officer is present to coordinate defensive operations.

Mary Worth, 1/14/26

I’m not sure how old Ian is supposed to be so I guess I won’t call this “elder abuse” per se but it’s clear that his mind has been broken by Toby and Sunny. Look at his sleepy, dopey smile as Sunny cackles evilly literally inches in front of his face! This is some real “He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother” shit right here, only with a parrot.

Shoe, 1/14/26

To me, one of the most depressing things about the Perfesser and Skyler’s home is that there’s exactly one place to sit in their living room, which tells us volumes about the relationship between the uncle and his barely tolerated nephew/ward. Today we see that even when they eat out together, the Perfesser insists on sitting as far away from his nephew as possible.

Luann, 1/14/26

When I started commenting on Luann again, did I know things were going to end up less than a year later with Luann getting propositioned to go fuck over by the dumpsters? No, of course not. Obviously not. Different choices would’ve been made had I known, I’ll tell you that much.

Challenge #7: Three (or more) things you like about yourself

This is hard. I am actually pretty comfortable with and positive about myself these days, but when I try to think about specific things I like about myself, my mind goes blank. Hmm.

Okay, I think I've got three )

What I’ve Just Finished Reading

Elizabeth Enright’s Then There Were Five. That’s right, the Melendys are back! This time, they befriend a local boy with no friends or relations except his horrible uncle, and the Melendy children take him home and ask “Can we keep him???” They gather scrap metal for the war effort, plan a festival (children in books always throw the most satisfying festivals), and put up a truly astonishing amount of tomatoes.

What I’m Reading Now

Onward and upward in Solzhenitsyn’s In the First Circle! The blurb on the front of this novel praises it as “suspenseful,” which is fascinating because that’s probably the last adjective I’d use to describe it. Absorbing, yes. Full of meticulous portraits of a dizzying array of people, yes. We meet a deeply religious prisoner, a soft-hearted prison guard, Stalin, a prisoner who still believes fanatically in Communism, a prisoner’s wife whose devotion to her husband is cracking under the strain of separation, her friend in their grad student dorm who is trying to wriggle free of being recruited as an informer…

But suspenseful? I wouldn’t call it suspenseful. We’re halfway through the book and we’ve just now meandered back to Volodin, the guy who telephoned the American embassy on Christmas Eve to warn them that the Soviets are planning to steal their atomic bomb secrets. We are not urgently searching for Volodin (well, maybe the fanatically Communist prisoner Rubin is urgently searching for Volodin), we are gently bobbing around in a pool and occasionally bobbing a bit extra hard when we come across one of the ripples caused when Volodin tossed his pebble.

Visiting an art museum in Atami

Today it's fine. I took a day off and went to Atami, a small town on hillside on Izu peninsula, to visit some art museum. They hold the exhibition of beautiful woodblock print. I wanted to see those woodblock prints, and also, that museum is on the hill and has the marvelous view of the ocean when sun shines. I visited there with mother, enjoyed the exhibition and the view.

The morning view from the art museum.

The museum building and the view from its front stairs.

The sign of the exhibition.

It's about 1 and a half hour train trip to Atami from Yokohama, so this was a good one-day trip. And going out with my mother was also good.
