30 Days of Fan Fiction Meme, Day 7
Jul. 5th, 2011 11:15 pm7 – Have you ever had a fic change your opinion of a character?
Um, yes,
andraste's Crusade fic, which I just now read, has changed my opinion of the apocalypse box, which I never even considered a character before. I'm sure this kind of change has happened lot for me, but I can't think of many examples off the top of my head. Of course,
louderandlouder's epic Death Note takeoff The Body, changed my view of L, Light, Near, and Linda. And before that
serria's Death Note fic changed my view of Watari (and much influenced my own writing of the character), so I guess I can think of examples:)
And way, way, way back when I first started reading fan fic online in 1998 or so
velvetpaws's Please Save My Earth fic, Falling from the Moon changed my view of the potential of the Issei and Jinpachi as characters (if not my broad outline of what they're like). I started reading this fic when it was in progress, and it was in progress for years, during which time Velvetpaws finished up reading the manga, I believe, and swung her story to correspond to its general outline. It is with the profoundest regard and out of the highest respect for her talent I say that I think this was a mistake. Her story was better than the manga's and its containment within the manga's agenda preempted a fascinating tale. It was very much to continue working out the ideas that she started in this fic that I began my own monster PSME ongoing novel thingie. So this fic changed truly my relationship to a whole fandom.
