Have you ever read The Great Divorce by C. S. Lewis? It's been a while since I read it, so I don't have all the details, but the main idea running through it is that the only reason anyone stays in Hell is that they choose to, that at any point they could repent & give up whatever it is that warps them, but many won't. They just stay in Hell--here a rather dull grey space--moving further and further apart from one another and holding on to the things they think of as "theirs."
