Reading List

[livejournal.com profile] whitebird, in the course of taking me out to an excellent dinner (thank you!), suggested that I post a reading list, so here goes. I will repost with updates periodically. I'll include blurbs, ratings for recently read works, and links to reviews/meta where applicable. Suggested reading always welcome!

Rating scale:
5 -- On the top two tiers of my favorites list.
4 -- Very good.
3 -- Good, maybe not my style.
2 -- Not impressive.
1 -- Execrable.

Fairly Recently Read:
* Loveless, vol. 1-7, Yun Kouga (3.5, BL manga): Abused kid finds himself swept up in a world of magical with an ambiguous protector by his side.
* V for Vendetta, Alan Moore (3, graphic novel): Masked man strives to bring Guy Fawkes' inspired revolution to post-nuclear, totalitarian Britain.
* Blade of the Immortal, vol. 23, Hiroaki Samura (5, manga): Machinations continue as the Itto-ryu pick up their operations and start their big move.
* Memory and Dream, Charles de Lint (3.5, novel): Art forms a bridge between our world and another as a group of college friends deal with growing up.
* Morgoth's Ring, J.R.R. Tolkien (4, assorted Middle-earth tales): I did a quick review of this one I first read years ago; it remains one of the best published posthumously.

Currently Reading:
* The City and the City, China MiƩville, on [livejournal.com profile] louderandlouder's recommendation. Murder in a city that comprises two overlapping but separate countries.

Future Reading:
* The Inkeeper's Song, Peter S. Beagle
* The Child Thief, Brom
* The Bridge, Iain M. Banks
* Feersum Endjinn, Iain M. Banks
* Loveless, vol 8, Yun Kouga
* The Devil's Whisperer, Miyuki Miyabe
* The Possessed/Demons, Dostoevsky (I tacked it before and got nowhere, but it may be time again.)

(Small joke: I asked my mother if she'd read The Dispossessed. My dad said, "That's by Dostoevsky, isn't it?")
