I think you're reading is correct (i.e. probably what the person meant): not being socially allowed to cut someone off is a commitment, even if not a major one.

I think my reply was a bit triggered, and I think I've been doing that quite a lot lately: hearing what I think people are saying rather than what they are saying.

I know I don't like it when people do that to me, so I need to be careful of not doing it to others.
