I think the US is one generation ahead on southern European immigration! My partner's dad is Italian and a baby boomer and he was treated very much the same way as a child - people from Italy, Greece, Lebanon and Turkey were not white. In my lifetime they became white in the city, but out here in a rural area (Irish and Dutch), my partner was considered not white until she'd been here 20 years. And after 9/11, Turkish and Lebanese people went back to being not white, including the non-Muslims.
