We did two ep's last night. I found it okay, certainly watchable. (I was also a little distracted by doing clay stuff with my daughter.) Baby Yoda is, indeed, very cute.
I agree The Orville feels more in the spirit of Star Trek, especially ST:TNG. I've only seen the first 3 episodes, and they didn't really grab me, but I've heard it gets much better as it finds its footing. I was immediately drawn to the brighter, happier vision of the future. It makes you realize how rare it is to see anything like that today, unless it's a setup for negative dystopian disillusionment.
